PT Vale Wins the Sustainable Business Award For the Highly Commendable Category 2022

ONLINELUWURAYA.CO, LUWU TIMUR —PT Vale Indonesia Tbk (PT Vale) has been awarded the Sustainable Business Awards (SBA) for the umpteenth time. This time, Vale won the Highly Commendable category.

The Highly Commendable Award was given for PT Vale’s commitment to the strength and quality of its sustainability program and progress that was carried out well within the entire company.
The award announcement, held online this year, was attended by PT Vale’s Head of Communication, Bayu Aji, Thursday (02/06).

The Sustainable Business Awards (SBA) is a regional sustainability awards platform created by the Global Initiatives (GI) in 2012. The awards were developed in partnership with PwC. In Indonesia, SBA is organized by GI in collaboration with PwC, Indonesia Business Council for Sustainable Development (IBCSD), and Indonesia Business Coalition for Women Empowerment (IBCWE). This year is the 10th SBA event.

SBA is regularly held in six countries, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. The primary purpose of the award is to encourage companies of all sizes to reflect on their sustainability efforts and learn from the best practices of their peers. This is also a form of appreciation for the efforts of business leaders in Indonesia in supporting the Paris-Climate Agreement, limiting global warming and disclose which businesses show leadership and are proven to be committed to sustainable practices. Companies that receive recognition are expected to motivate other companies to join together in creating a business climate that is in synergy with the environment and encourages business practices that care about sustainability.

There were 12 pillars that were assessed before PT Vale finally won the award, namely sustainability strategy, workforce, community, energy management, water management, waste and resource management, climate change and emissions, supply change management, land use and biodiversity, land use and biodiversity, business ethics and responsibility, stakeholder management and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

In the opening remarks of the SBA, IBCSD President Shinta Widjaja Kamdani said Sustainable Business Awards has been the leading sustainable award platform since 2012 that recognizes outstanding leadership in sustainable business practices.

“SBA is not only ceremonial but also shows leadership and creativity to innovate collectively for a more sustainable and inclusive future,” said Shinta.

CEO/President Director of PT Vale Indonesia Tbk, Febriany Eddy, also expressed appreciation for the company’s awards. She said what has been achieved so far is the result of the support of many parties, not only PT Vale employees but also the community and the government, who are jointly present in carrying out the company’s mission and vision.

“Thank you for this award. Of course, it will further spur the company in maintaining its commitment to sustainability for the future sustainability of future generations,” she said.

She revealed that PT Vale has a profound concern for sustainability, one of which is its commitment to decarbonization. Moreover, we all know that there is increasing attention to global decarbonization efforts. This is, of course, very important because the earth cannot wait any longer. We must act together and contribute to the entire global decarbonization effort.

Febriany also explained that not many parties are aware or have noticed that global decarbonization requires many basic mineral elements, one of which is nickel. Indonesia has a lot of nickel reserves and therefore plays an important role.

“PT Vale has a long and proud history in Indonesia. We are a nickel mining and processing company. We believe that we are part of the solution to decarbonization. Therefore, the nickel we produce must come from processes that meet the elements of sustainability, especially low-carbon processes. PTVI is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from scope 1 and 2 to 33% by 2030 and towards zero carbon emissions by 2050. We will support global decarbonization efforts through sustainable mining practices,” she emphasized, adding that the low carbon commitment will continue in PT Vale’s new projects in Bahodopi and Pomalaa.

“Whoever we are, what role we play in organizations and society, we must act now, reduce carbon emissions, and change the view that these efforts are not an additional cost but a worthy investment. Thank you for the stakeholders’ support. Let’s walk together to achieve new targets with a great desire to create a better life, now and for the future,” Febriany said.
